This is a photo of a very unique contest from way back in 2000. A company called High Octane, who previously held a Dunes Contest in Anaheim, wanted to take it to the next level and set up a contest in the middle of Los Angeles, inside the Santa Ana River with the goal of bringing the Freeride feeling into the city in front of more spectators.
None other than @mickydymond himself built the track out of sand, which was quite the challenge for the riders in the beginning (paddle tires!). However, the 25.000$ prize money were enough motivation in the end to bust out some tricks. Obviously, the riders with a background in racing had an advantage over those who didn’t and were able to manhandle the course with speed and grace.
Although there were some organizational problems, the crowd had a great time—even more when the masses started hopping over the fences because the line on the ticket stands wasn’t becoming smaller.
I’m not quite sure who the rider in this picture is—my guess would be either Jeremy Carter (RIP) or @billywalls924 . The results were the following:
1st: @briandeegan38
2nd: Adam “Highlighter” Pierce (RIP)
3rd: Jeremy Carter (RIP)
4th: @danpastorfmx
5th: @billywalls924
