Preserving and celebrating the history of Freestyle Motocross with a unique coffee table book. Work in progress.

Product not final, work in progress

"In the beginning there were a handful of professional racers that had flamboyant personalities and skills on the bike, but the pro race scene wouldn't welcome it. With strict rules at the races, it made practice during the week our playtime. This is the time when we could really be ourselves, let loose, and do the things our racing sponsors told us not to do. Pull our personalities out from behind the number plates. This was our first little rebellion against what we felt wasn't right and that set the stage.

"Inevitably, Freestyle Motocross would change the views and future of the motorcycle industry forever. Sorry to disappoint anyone who doubted or didn't believe in our social order because we didn't fit their opinion of the status quo. After surviving all the negativity over the past years, we the freeride community have one thing to say: We're not going away anytime soon."

HONOR THE PAST,
INSPIRE THE FUTURE

The Book of FMX goes beyond being a publication with historic data. It serves as a resurrection of lost memories and uncredited work by collecting dozens of analog and digital photo archives, thousands of articles and hundreds of personal conversations from within the community—riders, builders, photographers, mechanics, event orchestrators and more. The common thread of it all is to preserve the rich history of Freestyle Motocross.

"One thing that always attracted me to the FMX scene was the "live-for-the-moment" spirit that many of the crew embrace. After all, if you're only ever one jump away from serious injury, it does encourage you to make the most of every second. I think the biggest return FMX ever gave me was how to live, laugh and party… and maybe trash the odd hotel room."

THE BIG PICTURE:
HOW FMX EVOLVED AROUND THE GLOBE

The USA stands tall as the place where Freestyle Motocross shifted from a side attraction to an official sport for the first time, becoming a sustainable way of living. Europe and Australia quickly embraced this new movement within the blink of an eye. They forged their own professional scenes, filled with riders who eagerly awaited an opportunity to express their Freestyle mindset.

The Book of FMX unfolds the storyline of each of those continents, their unique communities and their individual passion-driven pioneer work.

Who will be represented in the book?

Without a doubt, you can’t tell the story of FMX without the icons. Enslow. Deegan. Pastrana. Torronteras. Maddison. All the legends you saw on television, in movies, and in the mags—they're part of the story. But there are also countless others behind the scenes who shaped and progressed the sport: photographers, filmmakers, editors, managers, brand owners, track builders, mechanics. Their story matters too. This book brings them all together.

ABOUT

I’m Jordi, a graphic designer living and working in Germany. As a kid, I developed a deep excitement for Freestyle Motocross. Europe’s largest and most influential print medium at the time—German motoX magazine—became my portal into the captivating world of FMX. Like many other kids, I drew my favorite riders on paper, scribbled Fleshgear logos on my school books, and threw No-Footers and Can-Cans on a bicycle over a self-built plywood ramp.

Life circumstances shifted my focus, but my fascination with FMX never faded. In my ongoing pursuit of new creative projects, I developed a vision at the beginning of 2023: a unique coffee table book. It didn’t take long for me to connect the dots, and soon I dove headfirst into an inspiring journey—and an uphill battle—working to create an outstanding book about the sport I’ve always admired.
